…and
then it was done. They scattered, and The Gufs were no longer making the
music that landed them on Atlantic Records. Fans lamented and begged for
them to reunite. Each member began a private journey that led down different
paths. For Goran Kralj, it wasn’t over. Songs kept breaking through,
and during his soul searching, he kept the sound of The Gufs alive. The
intent was to make music together again, and when that didn’t develop,
he decided to gather some new players and begin his solo career. It was
a refreshing step back, a way to write without pressure to become a rock
star. There were no expectations, no demands for radio friendliness, and
no requirements for hit songs. So he wrote. A year later, fans are receiving
Goran as a solo artist with the same zealous enthusiasm they had for The
Gufs.
Things happen for a reason and Any Day Now is proof that the accident of
picking up a guitar at the suggestion of a college roommate can turn into
opportunities that might not have been explored otherwise. A recurring theme
of possibility flows through this album, questioning in an uplifting way
while waiting for good things to happen. “Ready to Fall,” tells
the story of that girl we all know who foolishly falls in love, regardless
of the many failures she lives through. Someone takes a chance in “I’ll
be Around,” giving up everything she had to be with someone she loved.
Moral of the story? Don’t be afraid of taking chances, because you
might miss out on some great things. While Any Day Now proclaims an independence
from the band that gave Goran notoriety, it breathes familiarity. The punching
pop hook of “Long way out” smoothly transitions to the mellow
and uplifting, “Don’t (let the sun go down).” The
album is complete with quiet moments and toe-tapping songs that will get
you singing in your car, proving Goran’s talent for crafting catchy
pop tunes that rock.
During the year of recording Any Day Now, Goran teased fans with a powerful
single that hit the Midwest airwaves in the fall of 2001. A song about the
emotions of loss, wondering and growth, “Where Are You Now?”
was released after the September 11th terrorist attacks in New York City.
Everyone has a way of dealing with tragedy, personal or otherwise, and Goran’s
distinctive voice, lush piano and haunting cello provides the foundation
for a song that asks what’s next after such a tragedy.
Life is full of transitions, some dramatic, some obscure. Goran uses a song
to craft universally shared experience into words and music, creating a
moment people can relate to. |
